8. A Giant Shadow

거대한 그림자

​

Jack jumped behind the magnolia tree.

His heart was beating so fast he could hardly think.

잭은 목련나무 뒤로 뛰어갔다.

심장이 엄청 빨리 뛰고 생각을 하기가 어려웠다.

​

He peeked out at the giant monster. The horrible-looking creature was opening and closing his huge jaws. His teeth were as big as steak knives.

잭은 거대한 괴물을 엿보았다. 무섭게 생긴 생물이 입을 열었다 닫았다 하고 있었다. 이빨이 스테이크 나이프만큼이나 컸다.

Don’t panic. Think.

Jack peered down at the valley.

침착해, 생각하자.

잭은 골짜기를 살펴보았다.

​

Good. The duck-billed dinosaurs were sticking close to their nests.

좋아. 오리주둥이 공룡은 둥지 가까이에 붙어있었다.

​

Jack looked back at the Tyrannosaurus.

Good. The monster still didn’t seem to know he was there.

잭은 다시 티라노사우루스를 보았다.

좋아. 괴물은 여전히 잭을 발견하지 못했다.

​

Don’t panic. Think. Think. Maybe there’s information in the book.

침착하자. 생각해. 생각하는 거야. 아마 책에 정보가 있을 거야.

​

Jack opened the dinosaur book. He found Tyrannosaurus rex. He read:

잭은 공룡책을 꺼내들고 티라노사우루스를 찾았다. 그리고 읽었다.

​

Tyrannosaurus rex was the largest meat-eating land animal of all time. If it were alive today, it would eat a human in one bite.

티라노사우루스는 가장 큰 육식동물이다. 만약 티라노가 아직까지 살아있다면 인간을 한 입에 삼켜버릴 것이다.

​

Great. The book was no help at all.

Okay. He couldn’t hide on the other side of the hill. The Anatosauruses might stampede.

대단해, 이 책은 완벽하게 도움이 안 되는군!

좋아. 언덕 반대편에서 숨을 수는 없을 거야. 아나토사우루스가 몰릴 테니까.

Okay. He couldn’t run to the tree house. The Tyrannosaurus might run faster.

Okay. Maybe he should just wait. Wait for the monster to leave.

좋아, 나무집으로 뛰어갈 수도 없어. 티라노사우루스가 더 빨리 달릴 테니까.

좋아, 그럼 그냥 기다리는 수 밖에 없겠군. 괴물이 떠날 때까지 말이야.

Jack peeked around the tree.

The Tyrannosaurus had wandered closer to the hill.

잭은 나무 주변을 엿보았다.

티라노사우루스는 언덕 가까이를 거닐고 있었다.

​

Something caught Jack’s eye. Annie was coming down the rope ladder!

Was she nuts? What was she doing?

무언가가 잭의 눈에 보였다. 애니가 사다리를 타고 내려오는 게 아닌가!

저 바보멍청이가 뭘 하는 거야, 대체?

​

Jack watched Annie hop off the ladder.

She went straight to the Pteranodon. She was talking to him. She was flapping her arms. She pointed at Jack, at the sky, at the tree house.

잭은 애니가 사다리에서 내려오는 것을 보았다.

애니는 프테라노돈을 향해 나아가 그와 이야기했다. 애니는 팔로 날개짓을 해 보였다. 그리고 잭을 가리켰고, 하늘을 가리켰고, 나무집을 가리켰다.

She was nuts!

“Go! Go back up the tree!” Jack whispered. “Go!”

Suddenly Jack heard a roar.

애니는 미친 게 분명해!

"가! 나무 위로 다시 올라가라고!" 잭이 속삭였다. "어서!"

갑자기 울음소리가 들렸다.

​

The Tyrannosaurus rex was looking in his direction.

Jack hit the ground.

티라노사우루스가 잭이 있는 곳을 보고 있었다.

잭은 땅을 내리쳤다.

​

The Tyrannosaurus rex was coming toward the hill.

Jack felt the ground shaking.

티라노사우루스가 언덕을 향해 오고 있다.

잭은 땅이 흔들리는 것을 느꼈다.

​

Should he run? Crawl back into Dinosaur Valley? Climb the magnolia tree?

Just then a giant shadow covered Jack. He looked up.

달려갈 수 있을까? 공룡 골짜기 아래로 기어가 버릴까? 아니면 목련나무를 타야 할까?

바로 그때 거대한 그림자가 잭을 덮었다. 잭은 위를 올려다보았다.

The Pteranodon was gliding overhead.

The giant creature sailed down toward the top of the hill.

프테라노돈이 머리 위에서 날고 있었다.

엄청난 생물이 언덕 꼭대기를 향해 착륙했다.

​

He was coming straight for Jack.

그리고 잭을 향해 직진해왔다.
