6. Dinosaur Valley

공룡 골짜기

​

“Annie, look at this!” Jack called. “Look what I found!”

"애니, 이것 좀 봐!" 잭이 말했다. "내가 찾은 것 좀 보라구!"

​

Annie had gone up to the hilltop.

She was busy picking a flower from the magnolia tree.

애니는 언덕 꼭대기에 올라가 있었다.

그리고 목련나무에서 꽃을 따느라 바빴다.

​

“Annie, look! A medallion!”

But Annie wasn’t paying attention to Jack. She was staring at something on the other side of the hill.

"애니, 이것 봐! 메달이야!"

하지만 애니는 잭에게 관심을 주지 않았다. 그저 언덕의 다른 면에 있는 것을 빤히 쳐다볼 뿐이었다.

“Oh, wow!” she said.

“Annie!”

"세상에!" 애니가 말했다.

"애니!"

​

Clutching her magnolia flower, she took off down the hill.

“Annie, come back!” Jack shouted.

But Annie had disappeared.

애니는 목련꽃을 꼭 움켜쥐고서 언덕을 내려갔다.

"애니, 돌아와!" 잭이 소리쳤다.

하지만 애니는 이미 사라진 뒤였다.

​

“I’m going to kill her,” Jack muttered.

He stuffed the gold medallion into his jeans pocket.

Then he heard Annie shriek.

"저녀석 때문에 정말 못 살겠어" 잭이 중얼거렸다.

잭은 금메달을 바지 주머니에 찔러 넣었다.

순간 애니의 비명소리가 들렸다.

“Annie?”

Jack heard another sound as well. A deep, bellowing sound. Like a tuba.

"애니?"

잭은 또 다른 소리도 들었다. 아주 깊은 울음소리였다. 마치 튜바 같은.

​

“Jack! Come here!” Annie called.

“Annie!”

When he got to the top, he gasped.

"오빠! 이리 와봐!" 애니가 불렀다.

"애니!"

잭은 꼭대기에 올라가자 숨이 멎는 듯 했다.

​

The valley below was filled with nests. Big nests made out of mud. And the nests were filled with tiny dinosaurs!

언덕 아래는 둥지들로 가득 차 있었다. 거대한 둥지들은 진흙으로 만들어져 있었고, 둥지 안에는 작은 공룡들이 있었다.

​

Annie was crouching next to one of the nests. And standing over her was a gigantic duck-billed dinosaur!

애니는 한 둥지 옆에 쭈그리고 앉아 있었다. 그리고 오리 주둥이를 가진 거대한 공룡이 애니를 주시하고 있었다.

​

“Don’t panic. Don’t move,” said Jack. He stepped slowly down the hill toward Annie.

The huge dinosaur was towering above Annie. Waving her arms. Making her tuba sound.

"진정해. 움직이지 말고." 잭이 말했다. 잭은 애니를 향해 천천히 언덕을 내려갔다. 거대한 공룡은 애니 위에 있었다. 팔을 돌리면서, 튜바소리를 냈다.

Jack stopped. He didn’t want to get too close.

He knelt on the ground. “Okay. Move toward me. Slowly,” he said.

잭은 멈춰섰다. 더 이상 가까이 가고 싶지 않았다.

잭은 땅에 무릎을 꿇었다. "좋아, 천천히 내게로 와" 잭이 말했다.

Annie started to stand up.

“Don’t stand. Crawl,” said Jack.

Clutching her flower, Annie crawled toward Jack.

애니는 일어서기 시작했다.

"일어서지 마. 기어 와." 잭이 말했다.

애니는 꽃을 꼭 쥐고서 잭을 향해 기어오기 시작했다.

​

The duck-billed dinosaur followed her. Still bellowing.

Annie froze.

“Keep going,” Jack said softly.

Annie started crawling again.

오리주둥이를 가진 공룡이 애니를 따라왔다. 계속 울음소리를 내면서. 애니는 경직되었다.

"계속 와." 잭이 부드럽게 말했다.

애니는 다시 기어오기 시작했다.

Jack inched farther down the hill. Until he was just an arm’s distance from Annie.

He reached out—and grabbed her hand.

He pulled Annie toward him.

잭은 언덕을 조금 더 내려갔다. 애니에게 손을 뻗으면서.

애니의 손이 닿자 잭은 애니를 잡았다.

그리고 애니를 몸쪽으로 끌어당겼다.

​

“Stay down,” he said. He crouched next to her. “Bow your head. Pretend to chew.”

“Chew?”

"여기 있어." 잭이 말했다. 그리고 애니 옆에 웅크렸따. "고개를 숙여. 씹는 척 하고."

"씹어?"

​

“Yes. I read that’s what you do if a mean dog comes at you.”“She’s no dog, Jack,” said Annie.

“Just chew,” said Jack.

"그래. 나도 책에서 개가 다가올 때 어떻게 해야할 지 적혀있는 걸 봤어."

"쟤는 개가 아니야, 오빠." 애니가 말했다.

"씹으라면 씹어." 잭이 말했다.

​

Jack and Annie both bowed their heads. And pretended to chew.

Soon the dinosaur grew quiet.

Jack raised his head.

잭과 애니는 고개를 푹 숙이고 씹는 시늉을 했다.

그러자 공룡이 가만히 있었다. 잭은 고개를 들었다.

​

“I don’t think she’s mad anymore,” he said.

“Thanks, Jack, for saving me,” said Annie.

"저 녀석이 아직도 화가 났는지 잘 모르겠어" 잭이 말했다.

"구해줘서 고마워 오빠." 애니가 말했다.

​

“You have to use your brain,” said Jack. “You can’t just go running to a nest of babies. There’s always a mother nearby.”

"넌 생각 좀 해라." 잭이 말했다. "아기가 있는 둥지에 갑자기 달려가면 안 돼. 주변에 언제나 엄마가 있다구."

​

Annie stood up.

“Annie!”

Too late.

Annie held out her magnolia flower to the dinosaur.

애니는 벌떡 일어섰다.

"애니!" 그러나 너무 늦었다.

애니는 목련 꽃을 들고 공룡에게 갔다.

​

“I’m sorry I made you worry about your babies,” she said.

The dinosaur moved closer to Annie. She grabbed the flower from her. She reached for another.

"아기를 걱정하게 해서 미안해." 애니가 말했다.

공룡은 애니에게 가까이 다가왔다. 그리고 애니 손에 들린 목련 꽃을 움켜쥐었다. 그리고 다른 것도 집으려 했다.

​

“No more,” said Annie.

The dinosaur let out a sad tuba sound.

“But there are more flowers up there,” Annie said. She pointed to the top of the hill. “I’ll get you some.”

"더 이상은 안 돼" 애니가 말했다.

공룡은 슬픈 튜바 소리를 냈다.

"하지만 저 위에 더 많은 꽃들이 있어. 애니가 말했다. 그리고 언덕 꼭대기를 가리켰따. "내가 너에게 좀 가져다줄게."

​

Annie hurried up the hill.

The dinosaur waddled after her.

애니는 언덕 위로 뛰어 올라갔다.

공룡은 애니 뒤를 뒤뚱뒤뚱 따라갔다.

​

Jack quickly examined the babies. Some were crawling out of their nests.

Where were the other mothers?

잭은 재빨리 공룡새끼들을 관찰했다. 몇 마리는 둥지 밖으로 기어 나가고 있었다.

다른 엄마들은 어디있지?

Jack took out the dinosaur book. He flipped through the pages.

잭은 공룡책을 꺼내고 페이지를 넘겼다.

​

He found a picture of some duck-billed dinosaurs. He read the caption:

잭은 오리주둥이 모양을 한 공룡에 대한 그림을 발견했다. 그 아래 주의사항은 이렇게 적혀 있었다 :

The Anatosauruses lived in colonies. While a few mothers baby-sat the nests, others hunted for food.

아나토사우루즈는 군집을 이루어 산다. 몇 명의 엄마들이 둥지에서 새끼들을 돌볼 동안, 다른 공룡들은 먹이를 구하러 나간다.

​

So there must be more mothers close by.

“Hey, Jack!” Annie called.

그래서 인근에 더 많은 엄마들이 있을 것이다.

"오빠!" 애니가 불렀다.

​

Jack looked up. Annie was at the top of the hill. Feeding magnolia flowers to the giant Anatosaurus!

잭은 돌아보았다. 애니는 언덕 꼭대기에 있었다. 거대한 아나토사우르스가 목련꽃들을 먹고 있었다!

​

“She’s nice, too, Jack,” Annie said.

But suddenly the Anatosaurus made her terrible tuba sound. Annie crouched down and started to chew.

"엄청나지, 오빠." 애니가 말했다.

갑자기 아나토사우루스는 끔찍한 튜바소리를 냈다. 애니는 엎드려 씹는 시늉을 하기 시작했다.

The dinosaur barged down the hill.She seemed afraid of something.

Jack put the book down on top of his pack. He hurried up to Annie.

공룡은 언덕에서 달려 내려갔다. 무언가에 겁이 질려 있었다. 잭은 책을 가방 위에 내려놓았다. 그리고 애니를 향해 달려갔다.

​

“I wonder why she ran away,” said Annie. “We were starting to be friends.”

Jack looked around. What he saw in the distance almost made him throw up.

"쟤 왜 뛰어가는 거지?" 애니가 말했다. "이제 막 친구가 되려 했는데." 잭은 주변을 둘러보았다. 잭은 저 멀리 보이는 것 때문에 거의 토할 지경이었다.

​

An enormous ugly monster was coming across the plain.

거대하고 못생긴 괴물이 평지를 가로질러 다가오고 있었다.

​

He was walking on two big legs. And swinging a long, thick tail. And dangling two tiny arms.

He had a huge head. And his jaws were wide open.

Even from far away Jack could see his long, gleaming teeth.

그 공룡은 큰 두 다리로 걸으며, 길고 두꺼운 꼬리를 흔들었다. 작은 두 팔이 달려있고, 머리는 엄청나게 컸다. 턱은 넓게 열려있었고, 크코 거대한 이빨은 멀리 떨어져있는 잭에게도 선명히 보였다.

​

“Tyrannosaurus rex!” whispered Jack.

Jack grabbed his backpack and raced up the hill.

"티라노사우루스다!" 잭이 속삭였다.

잭은 가방을 잡고 언덕을 향해 내달렸다.
