2. THE MONSTER

괴물

​

Jack crawled through a hole in the tree house floor.

잭은 나무집 바닥에 나 있는 구멍으로 기어갔다.

​

Wow. The tree house was filled with books. Books everywhere.

우와. 나무집은 정말 책들로 가득 차 있었어. 어딜 봐도 책 뿐이야.

​

Very old books with dusty covers. New books with shiny, bright covers.

먼지가 낀 아주 오래된 책들부터 빛나는 표지의 새 책까지.

​

“Look. You can see far, far away,” said Annie.

"저기 좀 봐. 저기 저 멀리." 애니가 말했다.

​

She was peering out the tree house window.

애니는 나무집 창문 너머를 내다보고 있었다.

​

Jack looked out the window with her.

잭은 애니와 함께 창문 밖을 내다보았다.

​

Down below were the tops of the other trees.

아래로는 다른 나무들의 꼭대기가 보였다.

​

In the distance he saw the Frog Creek library. The elementary school. The park.

저 멀리에는 프록 크릭 서점이 보였다. 초등학교도, 공원도 보였따.

​

Annie pointed in the other direction. “There’s our house,” she said.

애니는 다른 곳을 가리키며 말했다. "저기 우리 집이 있어"

​

Sure enough. There was their white wooden house with the green porch.

아니나 다를까, 두 남매들이 사는 초록색 현관에 하얀 나무집이 보였다.

​

Next door was their neighbor’s black dog, Henry. He looked very tiny.

옆 집에는 이웃이 기르는 개, 헨리가 있었다. 헨리는 매우 작아보였다.

​

“Hi, Henry!” shouted Annie.

"안녕, 헨리!" 애니가 소리쳤다.

​

“Shush!” said Jack. “We’re not supposed to be up here.”

"쉿!" 잭이 말했다. "아직 여기 누가 있는지도 모르잖아."

​

He glanced around the tree house again.

잭은 나무집을 다시 한 번 휘 둘러보았다.

​

“I wonder who owns all these books,” he said.

"나는 이 책들이 전부 누구 것인지 궁금해." 잭이 말했다.

​

He noticed bookmarks were sticking out of many of them.

그는 여러 책 사이에 끼어진 책갈피들을 보았다.

​

“I like this one,” said Annie. She held up a book with a castle on the cover.

"난 이게 좋아." 애니가 말했다. 그는 성이 그려진 표지의 책을 집어 들었다.

​

“Here’s a book about Pennsylvania,” said Jack. He turned to the page with the bookmark.

"이건 펜실베니아에 대한 책이야." 잭이 말했다. 그는 책갈피가 꽂힌 페이지를 열었다.

​

“Hey, there’s a picture of Frog Creek in here,” said Jack. “It’s a picture of these woods!”

"애니, 여기 프록 크릭 그림이 있어." 잭이 말했다. "이 숲의 그림이야!"

​

“Oh, here’s a book for you,” said Annie.

"와, 여기 오빠를 위한 책이 있어." 애니가 말했다.

​

She held up a book about dinosaurs. A blue silk bookmark was sticking out of it.

애니는 공룡에 관한 책을 집어 들었다. 거기엔 파란색 비단 책갈피가 꽂혀져 있었다.

​

“Let me see it.” Jack set down his backpack and grabbed the book from her.

"어디 한 번 보자." 잭이 책가방을 내려놓고 애니에게 책을 받아들었다.

​

“You look at that one, and I’ll look at the one about castles,” said Annie.

"오빤 그걸 봐. 나는 성에 대한 책을 볼 거야." 애니가 말했다.

​

“No, we better not,” said Jack. “We don’t know who these books belong to.”

"아냐, 그러면 안 돼." 잭이 말했다. "아직 이 것들이 누구 책인지도 모르잖아."

​

But even as he said this, Jack opened the dinosaur book to where the bookmark was. He couldn’t help himself.

잭은 이렇게 말하면서 공룡 책의 책갈피가 꽂혀져 있는 페이지를 펼쳤다. 잭은 참을 수 없었다.

​

He turned to a picture of an ancient flying flying reptile. A Pteranodon.

잭은 하늘을 나는 고대 파충류 그림으로 넘겼다. 프테라노돈이었다.

​

He touched the huge bat-like wings.

잭은 마치 박쥐처럼 생긴 엄청 큰 날개들을 만져보았다.

​

“Wow,” whispered Jack. “I wish I could see a Pteranodon for real.”

"우와." 잭이 속삭였다. "프테라노돈을 실제로 볼 수만 있다면."

​

Jack studied the picture of the odd-looking creature soaring through the sky.

잭은 하늘을 향해 솟아있는 괴생명체 그림을 배웠다.

​

“Ahhh!” screamed Annie. “What?” said Jack.

"앗!" 애니가 소리쳤다. "왜?" 잭이 말했다.

​

“A monster!” Annie cried. She pointed to the tree house window.

"괴물이다!" 애니가 소리쳤다. 애니는 나무집 창문 너머를 가리켰다.

​

“Stop pretending, Annie,” said Jack. “No, really!” said Annie.

"연극은 이제 그만해, 애니." 잭이 말했다. "아냐, 진짜라구!" 애니가 말했다.

​

Jack looked out the window. A giant creature was gliding above the treetops!

잭은 창문 너머를 보았다. 엄청 큰 생명체가 나무 꼭대기 위를 날고 있었다!

​

He had a long, weird crest on the back of his head. A skinny beak. And huge bat-like wings!

그 생명체는 길고 이상한 혹이 머리 뒤에 솟아 있었고, 가는 부리가 있었다. 그리고 엄청나게 큰 박쥐 모양의 날개도!

​

It was a real live Pteranodon!

그건 진짜 살아있는 프테라노돈이었다!

​

The creature curved through the sky. He was coming straight toward the tree house. He looked like a glider plane!

그 생명체는 하늘을 멤돌았다. 그리고 나무집을 향해 오기 시작했다. 마치 글라이더 비행기 같았다!

​

The wind began to blow. The leaves trembled.

바람이 불어오기 시작했고, 나뭇잎들이 떨렸다.

​

Suddenly the creature soared up. High into the sky. Jack nearly fell out the window trying to see it.

갑자기 그 생명체가 하늘로 치솟았다. 하늘 높이 높이. 잭은 그걸 보려고 창문에서 거의 떨어질 정도로 매달렸다.

​

The wind picked up. It was whistling now. The tree house started to spin.

바람이 거세졌다. 이젠 세찬 소리까지 났다. 나무집은 빙빙 돌기 시작했다.

​

“What’s happening?” cried Jack. “Get down!” shouted Annie.

"이게 무슨 일이지?" 잭이 소리쳤다. "엎드려!" 애니가 소리쳤다.

​

She pulled him back from the window.

애니는 잭을 창문에서부터 끌어당겼다.

​

The tree house was spinning. Faster and faster.

나무집은 계속 돌기 시작했다. 빨리, 더 빨리.

​

Jack squeezed his eyes shut. He held on to Annie. Then everything was still. Absolutely still.

잭은 눈을 질끈 감았다. 그리고 애니를 꼭 잡았다. 그리고 모든 것들이 멈췄다. 완전히 말이다.

​

Jack opened his eyes. Sunlight slanted through the window.

잭은 눈을 떴다. 창문으로 햇빛이 비스듬히 들어왔다.

​

There was Annie. The books. His backpack.

애니는 그대로였다. 책도, 잭의 가방도 그대로였다.

​

The tree house was still high up in an oak tree.

나무집도 여전히 참나무 꼭대기에 있었다.

​

But it wasn’t the same oak tree.

그런데, 그 참나무는 전과 같지 않았다.
